Timescale

How long does a simple online divorce take?

Even a straightforward divorce is not instant. The divorce process in England and Wales has fixed waiting periods.

The quickest cases are usually measured in months, not days. Delays can happen if information is missing, the application has errors, your spouse does not respond, or finances need dealing with before final order.

Minimum timeline Usually at least 26 weeks There is a 20-week wait before conditional order, then at least 43 days before final order.
1

Application prepared and submitted

The divorce application is prepared, checked and submitted online where the service is suitable.

2

Court issues the application

The court checks and issues the application. The 20-week period runs from the date the court issues it.

3

Conditional order

After the waiting period, the conditional order stage confirms the court sees no legal reason the divorce cannot continue.

4

Final order

After the required wait, the final order can be applied for. This is the order that legally ends the marriage.

Recommended for straightforward divorce-only cases

The main option for people who want the divorce application handled for them. It gives you more support than DIY, without moving straight to a full solicitor-managed route where that may not be needed.

Fixed-fee service Soon Service pricing will be confirmed before launch. The £612 court fee is separate.
Application prepared from the details you provide.
Submitted online for suitable England and Wales divorce-only cases.
Clear updates as the application moves through the court process.
Designed to avoid unnecessary hourly solicitor costs for straightforward cases.
Finance warning checks if divorce-only may not be enough.

Other options

Simple divorce is not the right route for everyone.

Some people are confident enough to do the application themselves. Others need regulated legal advice because money, property, safety or complexity is involved.

Do it yourself online

You can use the official online divorce service yourself and manage the application, court messages and next steps directly. This is usually the lowest-cost option, but you handle the admin and responsibility yourself.

Solicitor-managed divorce

A solicitor-managed route is usually better where you need legal advice, financial advice, child arrangements help, urgent support, or help with a spouse who may not respond or cooperate.

Do not miss this

The divorce application and financial clean break are separate.

A final order ends the marriage, but it does not automatically end financial claims between spouses. If there is a home, savings, pensions, debts, maintenance or any financial agreement, check the financial order options before finalising the divorce.
